Sinhala

U+0D80 – U+0DFF   (3456–3583)

The Sinhala range was introduced with version 3.0 of the Unicode Standard. The Sinhala script is used for the Sinhala language (also known as Sinhalese), which belongs to the Indo-Aryan group and is used by the majority of the people of Sri Lanka.

The characters that appear in the first column of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.

Microsoft Windows incorporates support for Sinhala Unicode from Windows Vista onwards.

You can find some or all of the characters in this range in the Windows Unicode fonts Akshar Unicode, Dinamina, Free Idg Serif, Free Sans, Free Serif, Iskoola Pota, KaputaUnicode, LKLUG, Malithi Web and Potha.

To see exactly which characters are included in a particular font, you can use a utility such as Andrew West’s BabelMap, or WunderMoosen’s FontChecker.

A product called Helawadana 2000 claims to include Unicode-compatible fonts and to allow Sinhala to be used in Windows applications. More information is available on the Microimage Web site.
