Olympus OM system close-up and macro equipment

Zuiko Auto-1:1 Macro Lens 80mm f/4

Introduction

This is one of the second generation of bellows macro lenses for the Olympus OM system and was first produced in 1980. Like the other second-generation lenses, this one has an automatic diaphragm and a focusing helicoid to assist fine focusing.

This lens is intended for use with the Auto Bellows or the Telescopic Auto Tube 65–116; its built-in focusing helicoid can only be used for fine-focusing, and the rear of the lens extends beyond the bayonet lens mount, so it is not possible to mount the lens directly on a camera. The inclusion of a focusing helicoid means that this lens can also be used on extension tubes; the shortest combination that allows an image to be brought into focus is 7 mm + 25 mm.

When used with the Auto Bellows, the Double Cable Release is needed to activate the automatic diaphragm.

This lens replaced the Zuiko 1:1 Macro Lens 80mm f/4, which has a manual (pre-set) diaphragm and does not have a helicoid for fine focusing. The Auto version is a new lens design, not just the earlier lens in a new mount.

Accessories

A hard leather case was supplied with the lens. A Mirror Housing was made to fit this lens. A dedicated close-up lens made specifically for this lens increases the maximum magnification with the Telescopic Auto Tube 65–116 to 2×.

A Calculator Panel for the T Power Control 1 was available for use with this lens and the T10 Ring Flash 1, with the distance scale in both feet and metres. Self-adhesive labels were provided with the T Power Control 1 to stick onto a Calculator Panel to provide readings for manual flash with the T10 Ring Flash 1, T8 Ring Flash 2 and T28 Macro Single Flash 1.

The Macro Flash Shoe Ring screws into the 49 mm filter mount, and takes the heads of the T28 Macro Twin Flash 1 or the T28 Macro Single Flash 1.

Going digital

When the Zuiko Auto-Macro 80mm f/4 is mounted on the Auto Bellows attached to a digital body, the only ways to close down the iris diaphragm are to use the cable release socket or the stop down lever on the lens mount of the bellows. When it is mounted on the Telescopic Auto Tube, OM/EOS and OM/Four Thirds adapters change the automatic diaphragm to manual click stops.

The following tables are based on those in the instruction leaflet, with adjustments for different sensor sizes (smaller sensors reduce the field of view) and for any additional extension needed to allow the release lever on the rear of the Auto Bellows to clear an overhanging pentaprism or flash.

ZUIKO MC AUTO-1:1 MACRO F4 f=80mm

Specially designed for macrophotography, copying and close-up work to deliver optimum resolution at 1:1 reproduction when used with the Telescopic Auto Tube 65–116 or Auto Bellows. Especially when used with the telescopic 65–116, it makes an extremely convenient macro lens (½× – 2×), as automatic diaphragm control and meter coupling is possible. With the Auto Bellows automatic aperturing is achieved by the use of the Double Cable Release.

Generally, ordinary lenses and conventional macro lenses cannot reproduce life-size images with critical definition, while this is the world’s first 1:1 macro for use with 35mm film.

In close-up and macro photography blurred images caused by camera shake become increasingly exaggerated as magnification ratio becomes greater. However, thanks to the Electronic Flash T32 or T10 Ring Flash, taking of razorsharp macro photos has become within each reach of every photographer. For advanced amateurs and professionals, a macrophoto stand and highly sophisticated PMT-35 macrophoto equipment are available in the OM System. A Closeup Lens 80mm is also available for 2:1 macrophotography to be used with this lens and the 65–116.

The lens is multi-coated and accepts a 49mm threaded filter. Compatible focusing screens are 1-4, 1-10 and 1-11.
